Visit the Ballet

July11

Experiencing The Nutcracker ballet was a long time tradition in our house. When the kids were younger, we took them to see it every year. The wonderful ballet was performed in Indianapolis at the old, Indiana Bell Theater at Christmas time. This tradition made it seem like it really was the Christmas season. After the ballet, we would walk around monument circle and look in the department store windows. The monument’s fountain would be frozen and people could ice skate in the pond. Horse drawn carriages gave a romantic feel as they took couples, young and old, on a tour of the city.

The nutcracker ballet has become among the most popular ballets performed, primarily around Christmas time. One of the most exciting things about the nutcracker ballet is the opportunity that the Moscow Ballet offers to children. Since Moscow Ballet’s first U.S. tour, local children have been chosen by audition in each performance city for roles in the play. I can imagine the excitement of having a child try out! On average, 60 children are selected per city. By the end of Moscow Ballet’s 11th Anniversary Tour in 2003 the company will have given more than 45,000 children a chance to perform along side top professionals.
