Just Sewing

Published by under entertainment

Oh my! I have not written here for a while! My son and daughter in-law and my daughter all came for a fun visit. We cooked, shopped and ate out. We watched tons of movies on DVD. I’ll be highlighting those later. My two dogs are very lonely now that our house is quiet. I am too.

Before company invaded, I was sewing. I made a few more chicken table runners.

And, I got a quilt ready to quilt. I don’t need a work out when I baste a quilt! I am sweaty by the time I finish.

I can’t wait to start machine quilting. Unfortunately, today was spent getting tax stuff ready to take to the accountant. Tomorrow is earmarked for sewing!

Retro Thinking

I seem to be on a roll with my infatuation with aprons. I was looking through tutorials on how to put a zipper in a pillow and ran across this account on the importance of aprons. This was written as a prequel to instructions on making an apron. Remember, this was written in 1926.

Did you ever stop to consider how many different kinds of aprons there were? A great, big, roomy, coverall apron for mother when guests are expected and important things are happening in the kitchen. A wee bit of a lace apron for the person who is in charge of the tea-urn at five o’clock. A smart bungalow apron to make household duties seem pleasant, and a rather petty apron with deep pockets for the sewing room. And, of course, sweet little aprons for the kiddies—gaily colored and bound with an almost grown-up regard for smartness.

You see, there are really so many interesting kinds of aprons that the subject deserves a lesson all by itself. We’re going to teach you little important points about tea-aprons and work-aprons, children’s aprons and chafing-dish aprons. And when you are all finished with the lesson, you are actually going to make a pretty apron for yourself.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that an apron is a not-so-very important garment. As a matter of fact, it is really quite as important as a dress—for who can tell when an unexpected guest is going to “drop in” for a chat and find one at the disadvantage of being aproned! But the disadvantage can be changed to an advantage. The apron can be made a very delightful garment. One may actually feel proud to be found wearing a pretty combination of lace and ribbon and soft white dimity—or a rather trig apron-affair of gingham and muslin ruffles.

And then, of course, there is the feeling of utter neatness and satisfaction when one is wearing a crisp little apron. Even though it does hide the pretty dress underneath, it can be so very pretty itself that one hardly minds. And that’s what we’re going to do—we’re going to teach you all about pretty aprons that you can make at home and that you will be delighted to wear.

Everyone Should Own an Apron

Remember making an apron in Home Ec? Read below:

The History of ‘APRONS’

I don’t think our kids know what an apron is unless it is a customer service representative work apron provided by a fast food restaurant!

The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..

And when the weather was cold Grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow,

Bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.

After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It would even become a private prayer closet when she used it to cover up her face for an urgent time of prayer in a busy household.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes.

Skipping Halloween

Published by under entertainment

I have a smart sister. While I have been busy sewing fall pillows, she has been busy making bags for Christmas sales. I should take her idea and get my Christmas fabric out too. The best fat burner I can think of is to get busy sewing and stay out of the M & M’s my mom brought over.

My sister is getting ready to put her purses in a local craft show. Christmas items sell really well this time of year. Look at the pretty bags she has been making.

Stuffing it Like a Memory Foam Mattress!

Published by under entertainment

Many of you know that I like to sew. I make purses and quilts. Well, I tried my hand at making a pillow. I have made pillows before but I can’t remember when I have ever put a ruffle on a pillow. The pattern called for a loooong piece of fabric gathered to make a very “ruffely” ruffle. That was where my frustration began. It was like trying to stuff my body into a size 2 pair of jeans! I also had trouble getting the pillow to look full. Unlike memory foam mattresses, the corners were flat. I think the problem was that the top was too big for the size pillow form I bought. I was afraid that the pillow form wouldn’t fit so I added inches to the project. I had to tear the whole thing apart and cut it down. Now that the pillow fits the form like a memory foam mattress topper, I think it looks a whole lot better.

What do you think?

I still want to buy some beads and decorate the squiggly vines coming out of the pumpkin.

T.G.I.F.

Published by under a bit of everything

There is just something about Friday that makes the whole week worth going through. I guess it is knowing that tomorrow is Saturday and I can sleep in. I never sleep in though, no matter how hard I try. I start to think of all the things I want to accomplish for the day and jump out of bed. Um, I should say drag myself out of bed. After coffee, I can get busy.

Today’s weather is so nice! We have had so many hot, sultry days that take one’s breath away. It has not been a very enjoyable summer. I have been miserable wearing protective clothing as I crawl under our pine trees in search of poison ivy. My dogs rub up against the poison ivy plants and then I get it because I love to nuzzle in their necks and give them love. This cool weather will make getting some outdoor jobs completed so much easier.

I spent all day yesterday making a purse from a pattern that said it could be done in 2 hours. Shea, right. It is a cute little tulip bag. It was easy so maybe the next one will only take 2 hours.

Today, I need to catch up on our business’s paper work. All play could get me fired! Have a great Friday everyone.

Storms!

Published by under entertainment,family

I hope my friends in the southern states are safe. I read at CNN online that they are having severe storms. A tornado touched down at a mall near St. Louis today. I haven’t heard from my son to find out if the mall was near where he and his wife live. I will be glad when he calls me. A mother never stops worrying does she? I just watched a documentary about Kaskachia, Illinois and how it survived flood after flood. Not a good show to watch when worrying.

I am happy to say that I got most of a quilt machine quilted last night, ripped out mistakes and am ready to finish quilting it. I am a novice at machine quilting so it is rare that I am satisfied with my work. I made a lot of progress and am getting better at making flowers with dark circles and swirls. The more I made, the better they looked, imo. I did tire of working on it and cut fabric to make another quilt top. You can see the fabric at Kreated by Karen. It is an easy pattern to sew and I can’t wait to finish cutting and pressing. I like the sewing part!

Daily Dribble

Published by under health

I had to get up early this morning for a doctor appointment. I guess I have high cholesterol so I need to take medicine to lower it. Waiting for my appointment left me reading everything I could find in the little, cold, room. I read what to do if you get H1N1, pronexin reviews and how to contact my doctor online. I should have brought my own book. Why don’t they let me sit in the main waiting room if the doctor is going to take a half hour to get to me. I would rather watch people than look at four walls and read boring stuff.

I sound grouchy and I really am not! I am excited to get to work with some new fabric I bought this past weekend. I cleaned out my sewing room yesterday and feel as if I can really think now. Why is it when my room is chaos I cannot function? I found a few projects I had started but never completed. I made a space on a shelf for those projects so I can get to them without having to dig for them. Organization was my goal yesterday! Sewing is my goal for today.

I was torn on whether to list this bag because I truly wanted to keep it for myself. I have too many bags though and so I just listed this on my Etsy site.

Colt’s Purse in Progress

Published by under a bit of everything

Today’s plans have changed! Instead of clearing all the tax papers from my office furniture, I will be sewing. Often, on Saturday, I work in my office to avoid interruptions that can cause me to make mistakes when working with numbers. It is crazy how much more quickly I am able to get things done without the interruptions. Hubby usually runs the customer side of our business on Saturdays. I’ve always thought that if he would work in the store instead of installing, we would sell so much more carpet. He can dig through stuff and satisfy the customer’s needs much more so than I can. It isn’t that he is pushy; he knows what he is talking about when it comes to how things should be done. He installs to make sure things are done the way they are supposed to be done. These attributes have afforded us thirty one years in business.

I digress to the topic as to why I will not be pushing numbers but the pedal of my sewing machine instead. I had a customer this morning! She saw a Colt’s purse I made for a friend and wants me to make one for her. I have the fabric and the time. Off to sew I go. Have a nice weekend everyone!
