Quiz!
Posted on August 29th, 2007 at 5:28 pm by GregM

I gave a quiz today. My class made me mad on Monday because they weren’t staying up on current events, which I have repeatedly told them was a requirement for this class. I asked them who Alberto Gonzalez was and I only had two people who had even heard the name. Today, I gave a current events quiz with three questions.

1. What is the name of the public official who resigned on Monday after months of criticism regarding his actions as Attorney General of the United States?

2. To what charges did Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) recently plead guilty, potentially ending his 27 year career?

3. Which country battled wide-spread fires that may have been started by terrorists?

The class averaged an 42%. Only one person got a 3/3, and four people got zeros. What frustrates me most is that seven people didn’t know the answer to the first question after we had talked about it for a while on Monday. None of them were absent, so they don’t have an excuse. Oh well, I can’t force them to stay up on current events. All I can do is make sure they know their grade will suffer if they don’t.

Insurance
Posted on August 29th, 2007 at 11:21 am by GregM

I’ve been thinking a lot about insurance lately. I’m not talking about life insurance or car insurance because I’ve already got those. I’m also not talking about home insurance because I don’t own a house. I’m thinking about rental insurance. Now that I have my own apartment, I’m not sure if it’s something I need to look into or not. I’m not sure about cost or anything like that. My budget is pretty tight since my assistantship dictates that I am not allowed to get a second job. What do all of you think? Is it affordable? Have you ever had rental insurance?

My Digital Camera

I can’t find my digital camera. I don’t know if I left it somewhere or if it is just somewhere in my apartment that I don’t know about, left over from the move. I’m very frustrated because I want to post pictures of my apartment.

Vontoo

I have a great product to tell you about. It’s called Vontoo. Vontoo voice messaging is a service that allows you to send voice messages to lists of people simultaneously. This is something that can be a big help to businesses and corporations and organizations. I remember when I was the president of my fraternity, I really wanted something like this so that I could send important messages to my fraternity brothers if the need ever came up.

A corporation could use this service to send important messages to their employees in situations where an email would not be practical. Furthermore, this would be a great thing for universities to use to contact faculty, staff, and students if there is ever a campus emergency and everyone needs to be on the same page. I keep thinking back to the tragedy that happened this past spring at Virginia Tech. Perhaps some of those lives could have been spared if the university had a system like this set up to alert everyone if a terrible situation was occurring.

This is a great thing that a lot of people could utilize for a lot of different things, and I think it is a great thing for you to check into!

Parking Tickets
Posted on August 28th, 2007 at 11:49 pm by GregM

I got a parking ticket at school today. I am very annoyed. I was parked in the very last graduate assistant spot, right next to a faculty spot, and when I went back to my car after a long day of classes, I had a parking ticket for parking in a faculty spot, which I didn’t! I got to school early today so that I could find a parking spot. Almost all of the GA spots were taken by faculty members who can park anywhere but choose to park in the GA spots because they’re closer to some of the buildings. There were all sorts of faculty spots open that were twenty feet further from the buildings, but of course the faculty just had to park in the GA spots. I was glad I got to park in a GA spot because they’re hard to find thanks to the faculty members who don’t park where they should.

Home Improvements

When I was growing up, my parents owned a floor covering business. I got to see a lot of interesting houses, both new and old. I always found the different types of architecture very interesting. Some rooms were much more appealing than others, but the right floor and paint can do wonders. Outside of the home, the exteriors were all different, and some of the older houses needed a paint job. If you live in the Houston area and need some painting done to your house, you should check out All-Tex. They do Houston painting and window replacement, among other things. You’d be surprised how much of an impact can come from a new coat of paint.

Ugly Betty
Posted on August 26th, 2007 at 11:30 pm by GregM

Taryn was here this weekend. We had a great time. We spent most of the weekend watching movies and Ugly Betty. I’ll try to do a review of one of the movies later.

Ugly Betty is hysterical, but I have another reason for watching the show. One of the characters, Marc, is played by Michael Urie. He is from the Dallas area, not too far from where some of my family lives. When he was in high school, he competed in speech and debate. He was the national champion in dramatic interpretation in 1998, the year he graduated. He performed “Confessions of a Nightingale” by Charlotte Chandler and Ray Stricklyn. This play is about Tennessee, arguably one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century. Urie’s performance was extremely moving. In my eight years of competing in speech, I always strived to be as passionate about my characters. His inspiration was one of my driving forces for always wanting to get better. He seemed to enjoy performing, and I believe he performed with a purpose. He brought Tennessee Williams to life for so many people.

Legal Services

When I was a senior in high school, I had the good fortune to intern in a local law office in my hometown. Through this internship, I learned just how important it truly was to have a good lawyer representing you when you are having legal issues in your life. One area that a lot of people in our society will eventually need is personal injury lawyers. If you live in Florida, you might want to check out the Personal Injury Trial Group. There you can find a Florida personal injury lawyer if you need one. I hope you don’t, but you never know.

My Neighbors

In my apartment complex, there are a lot of international students. It is interesting living around them because I’m seeing some of the things they do that aren’t really considered socially acceptable. For example, my neighbor was walking around his apartment in his boxers, which is fine, but the door to his apartment was wide open. Also, we have a collection of shopping carts in the area because a lot of the international students go shopping at Kroger and bring their cart home with them. We now have carts littering the parking lots. I know they’ll catch on to our social norms. Until then, I’m finding our differences interesting.
