Gun Enthusiast

Karen | news | Friday, 28 September 2007

My husband has collected guns since he was a young boy. I often wondered if friends were reluctant to let their children visit our home due to the many guns on display. They need not have worried. Safety is the number one priority at our home.

Lynn’s interest in guns spans from antique rifles to pellet guns. During a search on the Internet, I discovered a website I thought he might like. Airgun Depot stocks a wide variety of many types of guns. He checked out the site and I had trouble getting my laptop away from him! I think he liked it! He has been looking at different models of air rifle scopes. He says their prices are great.

Hot Air Balloons

Karen | attractions | Friday, 28 September 2007

We went to a hot air ballon extravaganza and had so much fun. There is more involved than I knew of to get those balloons in the air.

Many people are needed to guide the basket and help the pilot get that balloon going. At a balloon show, there are so many balloons that it takes your breath away. They come in many colors and styles. Stacy said they make balloons near where she lives in Elizabeth City, NC.

If you ever get the chance, you should go to a hot air balloon show.

Baseball Rampage

Karen | Important | Thursday, 27 September 2007

Baseball Rampage is a secure website where you can order all the equipment needed for the game of baseball. They carry batting gloves, bats, uniforms, catchers’ masks. You name it. If it has to do with baseball, they have it.

Their website is very manageable and that makes it easy to find what you are looking for quickly. The search feature allows for searching if you aren’t sure what something is called. Alternatively, use the search engine feature to take you to a page quickly. I typed in the word mask and found 5 different styles plus a bag to carry it. They have their bases covered! Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Right now, they are having their 2007 bat blowout. You had better check out these deals as soon as possible. With the great prices they are offering, they won’t be around for long. Their website has another feature that will wow you. When they have a special item on sale, they offer it right on the front page. For instance, I clicked on those two magical words, “on sale” and was taken to the page where they are offering training bats at a special price. You had better take a glance at those and get yours ordered.

Baseball Rampage is a great site to get your supplies. They also love the “spirit” of baseball. Check out the community section. You can upload photos, schedule, player profiles, and more! Find your competition, find a tournament, or promote your team.

In addition to selling performance baseball gear online, they also have a retail baseball store in Columbus, OH, conveniently located just off the I-270 Outerbelt. Their store and warehouse facilities occupy a 6000 square foot building, and include a batting cage where you can test out demo baseball bats. Come in and let their baseball experts get you the baseball gear you need.

Touring Ethiopia

Karen | travel | Thursday, 27 September 2007

What do you think of when you think of the country of Ethiopia? I think of those commercials of little orphaned children.

Ethipopia is promoting tourism! Harar, Africa is the fourth holiest city in Islam. This center of Islamic faith is located on the horn of Africa. There is a 13 foot wall that surrounds ancient mosques. Some consider Harar the birthplace of coffee. You can smell coffee throughout the streets. and serpentine alleyways.

The city has troubles. There aren’t many hotels and water is scarce. The government is trying to fix the problem. The regional government has given a 10-year tax break to anyone interested in building tourist facilities.

I hope they have a successful tourist business.

Border Patrol Not Keeping Them Out

Karen | Important | Thursday, 27 September 2007

border.jpg
The Canadian/US border is not as safe from terrorists as our government hoped. I heard on the national news last evening that government investigators were able to cross from Canada into the United States carrying a duffle bag with contents that looked like radioactive material. They never encountered a law enforcement official, according to a report released Thursday by investigators from the Government Accountability Office. If they could do it, what’s to keep a real terrorist from doing it? There are many wooded areas on the Canadian border. I don’t know how they could police the whole border.

Beautiful Kilts

Karen | news | Thursday, 27 September 2007

weddinggown-sml.jpgI have a friend who’s daughter is learning dance. She has ordered the most beautiful kilts for her daughter. I was curious about the different kilt styles and from what type of material they are made. The kilt on the woman in the picture is a wedding kilt. I think is absolutely gorgeous.
The word kilt comes from the Scots word kilt meaning to tuck up the clothes around the body. The website, www.heritageofscotland.com is a great place to see many styles of kilts. The Sottish kilt was originally made for men who worked in rugged terrain. The loose fit allowed more comfort and durability than their country garb would endure. Sometimes, grease was used to make the kilt waterproof. I always thought kilts were worn when they dressed up for a festival or party! Now I know they were more commonly worn for work.

Heritage of Scotland has kilts, kilt accessories and jewelry. The plaids, or tartans, of the scottish kilt represent different clans. antrim.jpgThe plaid pictured represents the Antrim clan.

The blue tartan represents the Fermanagh Clan. fermanagh.jpg

Quote from 1746

“The garb is certainly very loose, and fits men inured to it to go through great fatigues, to make very quick marches, to bear out against the inclemency of the weather, to wade through rivers, and shelter in huts, woods, and rocks upon occasion; which men dressed in the low country garb could not possibly endure.”

Straws for Africa

Karen | Important | Thursday, 27 September 2007

I saw a news article on the National news last evening that was pretty exciting. Many people die in Africa each year due to Typhoid. They get it from unclean drinking water. There is a straw that purifies water as you drink through it. It is helping the African people drink clean water. Isn’t that amazing? I think it is wonderful. I hope people will support getting the straws to Africa.
