My Visit to a Dairy Farm

I believe in mental health days. That is when you do something just because it sounds like fun. It is even better when it turns out to be so much fun that you cannot wait to go back.

Yesterday, mom and I went with a group from church to Fair Oaks Farms. Fair Oaks Farms is located in a portion of Indiana that is well suited for cows because corn grows well there. In fact, the farm covers approximately 19,000 acres. Fair Oaks Farms is a commercial dairy operation that has opened parts of its process as exhibits so that people like me can understand how a dairy farm works. This dairy is so modernized with its computer generated milking machines that I would not have been surprised to see Asus labeling on its components. It was awesome.

I had just read the book Food, Inc. so it was nice to see that not every farm is like the ones described in that book. This farm is so clean that the cows even look happy. LOL

There are interactive exhibits where kids learn all about cows, including the fact that they have 4 stomachs. They can play on a giant air jumping pillow and climb a giant milk bottle to test their climbing skills.

Cheese is made right there at the farm. That was interesting. Of course we were able to buy cheese from their store and they also sold ice cream. It was delicious.

For me, the most interesting part of the experience was watching a live birth. Two mama cows were in the birthing barn when we arrived. One had just had her calf and the other was in the process of delivering. I just wanted to help her!

It was a fun day.

He Is Stylin’

Published by under family

My husband likes to look nice when wearing casual clothes but he never likes to take the time to shop. A few weekends I gently prodded him to the men’s department of JC Penney and helped him pick out a new suit. We are going to a wedding tomorrow. He found some nice navy slacks and a beige blazer that will look nice. He also bought a new shirt and tie. He does need new socks but we forgot about them. He will have to wear his old ones and hope no one looks hard at them. LOL

I was shocked when he picked out a pair of shorts. He has worn them every day after he takes off his work clothes. He even had me wash them and dry them so he could put them back on! I decided he needed more than one pair so I checked out the codes for online coupons and ordered him two more pair plus a pair of docker type shoes to go with. He is stylin’!

Sometimes, a wife just has to push a little.

36 Years Together

Published by under a bit of everything

Yesterday was mine and hubbie’s 36th wedding anniversary. While he could have sent me a funny card making reference to the best weight loss pills, he chose this cute little card with penguins on it. Inside the card says, Marriage the Great voyage of discovery! Glad I’m sharing the journey with you!

We don’t exchange gifts but I knew it would make my husband very happy if a mowed our steep ditch with the hand mower. He was very surprised and happy. Not very romantic is it?

To Read or Work

Published by under entertainment

Today is a bit cooler outdoors and not humid so I think I will find something to work on in the yard. The patio cushions have been cleaned and the flowers weeded. I need to trim the bushes with my electric trimmer. I hate that job. My trimmer won’t stay plugged in. I am constantly adjusting the plug because it falls out just as I am on a roll. Grrr I also hate trimming the bushes because it makes the mosquitoes come out in droves. I will have to spray myself down with bug spray. I hate doing that. Can you tell I detest this job? I think I will just read a book.

Photobucket

I am reading Laura Bush’s book, Spoken from the Heart. I love how she writes. I think her growing up years were very similar to mine. She played make believe with her dolls and she loved to read. I am only a few pages into the book so I will let you know how I feel about the rest of the book.

Media and War

Published by under entertainment

Hubby and I watched a good movie last night, Green Zone. Of course, I was farming on Facebook but I was still able to follow the story. I only asked once what was going on. The movie has me thinking about how wonderful the technology is that our soldiers are able to use today. Of course, the enemy probably has the same technology. The movie reinforced my thinking that we, as citizens, only hear what the media puts out for us to hear. I think media is used by the government to get what they want. They tell us that a battle occurred, our side won and we believe it. It is scary to think how events can be portrayed to us back at home. I was a teenager who was more worried about side effects of methylburn and lightening my hair when the war in Vietnam was taking place. I wonder how much hype my parents took to be true.

Anyway, the movie was good.

In the Eyes of the Beholder

Published by under entertainment

Photobucket Mom put this cute fountain in her yard. I thought it was a rain god but was corrected. I am so glad because we do not want more rain than necessary! For awhile there, I thought we would need some insurance quotes for an ark!

On to other things… did you watch Pawn Stars or American Pickers last night? I admit to being one who looks at country homes with disgust when I see old cars and farm equipment sitting around going to rust. After watching American Pickers, I am beginning to look at things with a different perspective. I cannot tell you how many times my husband or I will point out a good spot for Frank and Mike to check out. If I knew what to look for, I’d be tempted to knock on a couple doors myself to get permission to dig through their stuff. LOL

A Muppet Tribute

Published by under entertainment

The muppets have something to say! Next they will be giving lipofuze reviews. LOL I love the muppets. Enjoy as they sing Stars and Stripes Forever.

I enjoyed the muppets when my children would watch them on television. Did you know that Jim Henson made up the word muppet? From Wikipedia: The word “Muppet” itself was said by Henson to have been created by combining the words “Marionette” and “puppet”. However, Henson was also known to have stated that it was just something he liked the sound of, and he made up the “marionette/puppet” story while talking to a journalist because it sounded plausible.
