While running around this past week, finding new quilt shops, shopping and eating at new places, we visited Kentucky’s capital city, Frankfort. Their capitol is a beautiful building as you can see by my picture.
While visiting Wilma’s Linens and Lace, an antique/fabric store, in Frankfort’s historic district, we discovered that the first courthouse in Frankfort was the Old Capitol and was just a few doors down. It was actually the third Capitol of Kentucky and was built in the Greek Revival style by Gideon Shryock. The building served Kentucky as its Capitol from 1830 until 1910. It is now operated as a museum by the Kentucky Historical Society. The Kentucky State Capitol Building in my picture, was begun in 1906.
In 1955, the newer Capitol was renovated at a cost of $2,500,000.00 and rededicated. The wiring, adequate in 1910 but inadequate as government workers relied more and more on electronic office equipment, was ripped out and new facilities were installed. Updates bearing energy auditor certification were needed. Also installed were new plumbing, heating, and – unheard of in the early 1900′s – air conditioning.
Kentucky State University is located in Frankfort. Daniel Boone is buried in Frankfort. He was the first white man who settled in Kentucky.
Frankfort has so much to see that I think I will have to visit again!
Each time we check into a hotel while on our mini vacation, mom, my sister and I walk by the exercise room. We decided, in order to avoid the side effects of lipovox, we needed to actually visit the room and use the equipment. I thought we were going to get hurt on the equipment because we were laughing so hard. I think we may have worked off an eighth of a pound while laughing on the exercise equipment. I highly recommend exercising.
I am in cheesecake heaven! My sister, Grace, my mom and I shared dinner so we would have room for cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory. I still suffered throughout the night but it was worth it! I shall become a walking advertisement for the best anti wrinkle creams and weight loss products if I keep this up. LOL We ordered the blueberry cheesecake and the raspberry cheesecake and shared. Have you seen the sizes of their servings? You get your monies worth at the CF! We are heading to the quilt store today. Byeee….
I am not going to complain about the hot weather. I had cabin fever after so many dreary days this winter and spring that I thought I would go crazy. The thing about hot weather is that when you take care of the yard you really get a work out. OMG! Someone get a spirometer and check my lung capacity. My face is beet red! My husband mows two and a half acres of our yard and while he is away on a fishing trip, I thought I would surprise him and have the yard mowed so he wouldn’t have a big mess to come home to mow.
I have recovered and am ready to go a quilt guild meeting tonight. Our speaker is Cindy Claycamp, the president of our state guild. She is a Hoosier quilt historian and will be giving a discussion geared to the home care & display of heirloom quilts. Claycamp is one of fewer than 100 certified quilt appraisers approved by the American Quilt Society in the United States. She has been quilting 35 years and has owned antique and fabric shops for many years.
Before I even turned fifty year old, the AARP people were welcoming me into their club. I do not want to join AARP. I see no advantage in joining a club that celebrates my getting older. All the discounts they offer, I have been able to get through my insurance carrier of other affiliation. I just wish they would stop wasting their money by sending me mailing after mailing. Although I am not interested in AARP, there are some perks to getting older:
1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
2. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first.
3. No one expects you to run — anywhere.
4. People call at 9 pm and ask, “did I wake you?”
5. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac in fact, they ask
you for your lipozene reviews.
6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
7. Things you buy now won’t wear out.
8. You can eat dinner at 4 pm.
9. You can live without sex but not without your glasses.
10. You get into heated arguments about pension plans.
11. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
12. You quit trying to hold your stomach in no matter who walks into the room.
13. You sing along with elevator music.
14. Your eyes won’t get much worse.
15. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.
16. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national weather service.
17. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can’t remember them either.
18. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size.
19. You can’t remember who sent you this list.
and joined the ranks of all those people who have tomato plants hanging from their metal buildings, shepherd’s hooks or as in our case from our giant bird house. I’d show you a picture but hubby took the camera with him on his fishing trip this week.
I think they are a fun idea and we will see if any tomato plants thrive growing in one. I am guessing that the soil will not drain as good and may lack nutrients compared to ground soil so an additive of some sort is really needed for good growth. I will have to remember to fertilize, fertilize, fertilize!
I didn’t know that there was such a thing as a sloth, did you? I thought it was a made up creature but lo and behold there really is an animal. Here is a cute video of sloths doing their thing. Apparently, sloths have very low metabolic rates.
Aren’t they adorable? I think they should be good sam roadside assistance spokespersons. They know how to relax! Eat and sleep. What more does a man or animal need?
I don’t know what most people fish with when they are trying to catch Bluegill but we fish with brown crickets. I have gotten used to picking them out of the bucket and putting them on my hook. I found that if you put the hook under the collar just below their head, it doesn’t kill them. Fish are attracted to crickets that are wiggling. I accidentally had a mattress effect on the bottom of the boat when I bumped the bait bucket over. It is an adventure to catch crickets when they are hopping all over the boat! It is horrible to have them crawling up one’s pant leg.
* Who makes the best hamburger/cheeseburger?
* Who makes the best french fries?
* Who makes the best shake?
* Who makes the best chicken?
I love a Whopper from Burger King. My fries should be curly ones from Arby’s and I love a cookies and cream milk shake from Steak n Shake. I like KFC chicken. It sounds like I better be getting some life insurance quotes! I had no idea I was so opinionated on my fast food selections! I guess, if I am going to eat unhealthy foods, I better like them.

Hubby and I just watched a great movie. I am always surprised at how quickly movies leave the theaters and are available on DVD.
Extraordinary Measures was a great movie. Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser portray the determined characters, Dr. Robert Stonehill and John Crowley, respectively. They discover that getting a drug produced takes the same manipulation as producing new industrial products. There is always some underhanded dealing as well as personality conflicts when trying to get investors to see things your way. From the back of the DVD folder, Together, this unlikely pair face impossible odds as they battle the entire medical establishment and time itself to find a cure before it is too late.
Tense, humorous, and enlightening. I highly recommend this movie.
