Wow that is an amazing story. I wouldn’t ever have thought twice about helping salamanders and other amphibians cross roads to get to their mating grounds. Of course I do not live anywhere near where such an occurrence takes place. Great article. Good people doing good things.

Your story reminded me of an experience I had about ten years ago. I was driving along a lonely highway in Ontario Canada. It was a stretch of about 75 miles where the only signs of life were in the streams, ponds and swamps on either side of the road.

For about 5 miles of this stretch there were literally hundreds if not thousands of turtles crossing the highway.

At first I was quite excited to see this amazing event. I slowed my speed so that I could work my way around the turtles that were on the road at the time.

However, it soon became quite depressing to me as I cam across several crushed turtles. Obviously some motorists had viewed this as an inconvenience, instead of an opportunity to witness a very rare event in nature.

My hat goes out to the folks who spent their evenings taking care of the salamander crossings.
