My high school never had classes for basic things such as opening a bank account or balancing a checkbook. These are things kids need to know how to do, and parents aren't always around to teach them. Nowadays banking can be done online (you don't really need to balance anything because every transaction is available online) but no one ever taught me how to open the bank account. Simple life skills are neglected. Team building skills are quite necessary too; sports are a great way of being a part of a team. I played sports my whole life and believe I have become a better person because of it. Regards!

There has to be a balance. Sports were so important to my sister and I when we were in school, but we were also straight A students, and I think it is because sports taught us the discipline needed to multi-task.

The sad thing is, there are a lot of parents who won't take the time to teach their kids those values at home. I think it's important to have all kinds of programs - not just sports. It's like when you hear of schools cutting music. Music teaches kids problem solving, it enhances IQ, and it teaches discipline. It's just so frustrating.

After reading this post, i'd like to tell you something, you may agree or disagree. there is a good thing that i've heard from my grandfather: "One can easily rule slow brain society."
That is why sport is so important , you don't have to study math, social science and other vital sciences that will develop your brains, instead you should go in for sport!

I worked in the public school system for 15 of the 20 years, I've been in education. I have always said that our system needs to get with the times. Bill Gates just can't do it all...but he has said the same thing.
It's sad, but it really does come down to the head count, money and test scores...and yes, it is why many choose to home school. It really is the better choice, anymore!

These actions speak loudly as to why folks homeschool their children. The children do not get the needed education and yes, we as parents need to step in and teach

That is so sad that it is happening in our schools. School administrators are NOT paying attention and thus kids suffer.

I think it's a shame that schools cannot manage their money better. It's not best for the kids to have good programs cut. Where I live they are cutting sports too (like swimming because of costs). The consumer programs you mentioned sound really useful--

They are just shutting down the schools here. There is also a resource center being shut down because it was not making any money. I haven't heard money going to our sports programs but it would not surprise me because colleges will yank these kids up to their level on scholarship and most of them need it. We never had consumer classes like that though. Nobody taught us how to balance check books, budgets, etc. Makes you wonder why we are usually last in learning too lol
