Shifting the Responsibility Back to the Home
I have an issue with our school system that bugs me. They are pulling programs that are beneficial to our kids and at the same time are spending more money to enhance sports programs. Why is so much attention placed on sports programs in our schools? Do they think our schools will produce a star athlete?
I am not against school sports. I know that so many of our kids are obese and need activity. Sports teach our kids how to follow rules and to work as a team. They learn a lot from sports. It is when other programs are cut, too easily in my opinion, to afford bigger and better stadiums and weight rooms, that I take issue.
The programs that are being cut are what our school calls consumer classes. These are the classes that teach our kids how to balance a check book and why credit cards should be handled with care. Our kids learn the basic homemaking skills like how to cook and how to plan a grocery budget. After reading our local paper, I was surprised to learn all the things that are taught in the consumer classes. It is sad to see them cut from our schools.
Thank goodness we have the Internet. We can get information from websites to inform our youth, if we take the initiative. There is an excellent website that deals with women’s health. It is called Women’s Health Base. It is full of information that covers things like smoking and lung cancer. Other articles include new discoveries concerning breast cancer and heart disease.
The website also has interesting articles concerning beauty, diet & fitness and relationships. Although the website is geared towards women’s health, this website is very informative for those of you looking for information to share with your children not matter their gender. Young adults may find answers to questions dealing with skin problems and healthy dating practices.
We need to pick up the pace on educating our kids, especially if they aren’t being taught these things in school. It all boils down to our responsibility as parents.

To my opinion sport makes our life vivid, and alive.
That is only due to sport that we can feel our body and lead health life style .
But everything should be done without exaggeration.

I saw in the news where there are school districts considering charging a fee to participate in sports. I have no problem with that. I used to pay fees for T to be in band in Ill, although I don’t here, but sports, which took place after school, were free. It made no sense at all.

Karen, this happening everywhere. Sports is being emphasized at the sacrifice of logic, rhetoric, and oratory in the classrooms. It’s part of why I homeschool.

They are just shutting down the schools here. There is also a resource center being shut down because it was not making any money. I haven’t heard money going to our sports programs but it would not surprise me because colleges will yank these kids up to their level on scholarship and most of them need it. We never had consumer classes like that though. Nobody taught us how to balance check books, budgets, etc. Makes you wonder why we are usually last in learning too lol

I think it’s a shame that schools cannot manage their money better. It’s not best for the kids to have good programs cut. Where I live they are cutting sports too (like swimming because of costs). The consumer programs you mentioned sound really useful–

That is so sad that it is happening in our schools. School administrators are NOT paying attention and thus kids suffer.

These actions speak loudly as to why folks homeschool their children. The children do not get the needed education and yes, we as parents need to step in and teach

I worked in the public school system for 15 of the 20 years, I’ve been in education. I have always said that our system needs to get with the times. Bill Gates just can’t do it all…but he has said the same thing.
It’s sad, but it really does come down to the head count, money and test scores…and yes, it is why many choose to home school. It really is the better choice, anymore!

After reading this post, i’d like to tell you something, you may agree or disagree. there is a good thing that i’ve heard from my grandfather: “One can easily rule slow brain society.”
That is why sport is so important , you don’t have to study math, social science and other vital sciences that will develop your brains, instead you should go in for sport!
The sad thing is, there are a lot of parents who won’t take the time to teach their kids those values at home. I think it’s important to have all kinds of programs – not just sports. It’s like when you hear of schools cutting music. Music teaches kids problem solving, it enhances IQ, and it teaches discipline. It’s just so frustrating.

There has to be a balance. Sports were so important to my sister and I when we were in school, but we were also straight A students, and I think it is because sports taught us the discipline needed to multi-task.

My high school never had classes for basic things such as opening a bank account or balancing a checkbook. These are things kids need to know how to do, and parents aren’t always around to teach them. Nowadays banking can be done online (you don’t really need to balance anything because every transaction is available online) but no one ever taught me how to open the bank account. Simple life skills are neglected. Team building skills are quite necessary too; sports are a great way of being a part of a team. I played sports my whole life and believe I have become a better person because of it. Regards!
I read about this site on another blog and now I regularly use it to find useful information. Thank you for sharing!
