My Job as the Ice Cream Lady
I was laughing so hard while reading Mrs. McCombers post about her job working at Chucky Cheese. She hated that job. It made me think back about jobs I have had.
I never had a job that I hated. I didn’t like a few of my jobs but that was mostly because they were so boring. I have to be doing something. I love it when the time flies by while I am working. I think that may have been why I liked driving an ice cream scooter. Yes, I was the ice cream lady or the Popsicle lady as I was sometimes called.

It took a bit of finesse to be able to drive the scooter and ring the bell that signaled I was coming. That scooter was a three speed on the column and I was very good at getting it in gear without it grinding. The only mishap I had with that scooter was when I parked it in my parent’s slanted driveway. I forgot to engage the emergency brake. The scooter scooted, backwards, down the driveway, landed in the neighbor’s yard across the street and left a scratch all the way down the side of my mom’s car. Ooops.
It was a nice job for a gal who worked on her tan. I was pretty bronze in those days. My boyfriend, now my husband of 34 years, tried to ride on the scooter with me. That was a hoot. That fair skinned, 200 lb boy just about tipped my scooter over when we rounded corners. It might have worked better had I not had the pedal to the metal. My lead foot was apparent even then.
I honestly don’t remember the kids chasing my scooter or if I had many kids buying my ice cream. My dad was my best customer. He’d buy a few bars every day when I’d stop at home to watch my soap opera. Did I mention that my route was in the housing addition where I lived? Another perk was being able to stick my head inside the truck’s freezer on really hot days. Oh, and the never ending supply of Drumsticks was pretty sweet.
Being the Popsicle lady was a great job.

I am happy to see that the vehicle is an Indian made from Bajaj.
That’s the coolest little ice cream truck (literally!) Sounds like a fun job, except for the mini-crash! I, too, would eat all the profits. It’s best I don’t work around food.

What a cool job. That definitely beats my Subway job, I came home smelling like pickles all the time. Drumsticks are the best. Thanks for commenting today.

That is sooo cute! I have never seen one of them before hehehe. It sure does sound like fun though! Over 34 years ago when you did it would off been the best time though, not like today. Still would be fun though lol.

What an awesome job!
I remember how annoying the ice cream truck’s music was in our neighborhood when my kids were small… mostly because I knew the kids were going to come running to ask for money.
I never hear it any longer as we live in a mostly adult community, but now I’d be the one going running to get a Haagen Daas!

Ha! It sounds pretty fun and of course the tan is a benefit. There would be no way for me to earn a living doing this- I’d be hanging out in the sun eating all the ice cream!

That sounds like it was a fun job. You didn’t say how long you did that. We still have them in some areas around here. We use to call it Joe’s . That was the name on at least one of the little scooters.
The kid’s would here the music and shout, Joe’s coming! I think we were some of his best customers.

That is so much fun! So you had a scooter and not the big truck where you had to lean down and talk through this tiny window. That sounds like that was the best job ever. Did they pay you by the hour or by how many scoops you could dish out?

My worst job had to be being a telemarketer. However, it paid semi decent, so I can’t complain too much. Though Ice cream lady sure would have been fun.
My favorite job was the summer I picked strawberries to earn enough money to buy a swingset.
