Free Calendar from Betty

Published by under a bit of everything

I began saving Betty Crocker coupons when I was a teenager. It was fun to sort through them and organize them according to how many points each was worth. Eventually, I had enough coupons to start ordering merchandise from the Betty Crocker catalog. I still use the silverware I purchased many years ago. Betty Crocker sells good stuff. Photobucket

I saw on Lisa’s blog, Work at Home Mom Revolution, that if you sign up at BettyCrocker.com as a newsletter subscriber you will get a free calendar. Very cool!

Thanks for the heads up Lisa!

Will Things Really Change?

Published by under economy

How are you feeling about the way the election turned out? The word on everyone’s tongue was change. Now that Barack Obama is making his personnel picks for his White House and cabinet public, Americans are wondering if the same old boys are going to offer change. Watch the following video and tell me what you think. Better yet, leave a comment at the youtube site.

Embedded Video

Are things are so out of control that we might as well let the chips fall where they may? The video, Changes are Coming, is a satire that points out many of the mistakes our nation has made. Did you notice the reference to Clinton’s moral issues? Does debauchery describe the money grabbing attitude of our nation?

The word change means to transform or convert. Change the form, nature, content, future course, etc., of (something) different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone: to change one’s name; to change one’s opinion; to change the course of history. .

If we take what we have learned and don’t repeat the mistakes we will be better. However, the word change also means to substitute another. Are we ready for one mistake to replace another? Change is scary. Hold on! It is going to be an interesting ride as we experience Change.

In the Remodeling Mode

Published by under a bit of everything

My friend, Elizabeth, is giving away a $100 Home Depot gift certificate. She and Chris must be giving up any remodeling until after the holidays! I can think of so many things I could do with that gift certificate. Perhaps I would purchase a new light filtering blinds to allow me to sleep longer each morning in my sleep number bed. Better yet, I could use the $100 to knock out the wall between my bedroom and the guest room. The wheels are turning in my remodeling mode brain. Check out Elizabeth’s post to see how to enter. The giveaway ends Sunday, Nov. 30th at 10:00 PM ET.

The Tablecloth

The Tablecloth

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
in Brooklyn , arrived in early October
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
their church, it was very run down and needed
much work. They set a goal to have everything
done in time to have their first service
on Christmas Eve.

They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc.,
and on December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished.

On December 19 a terrible tempest – a driving
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.

On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
le aked, causing a large area of plaster about
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just
behind the pulpit, beginning about head high.

The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
On the way he noticed that a local business was
having a flea market type sale for charity so he
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
embroidered right in the center. It was just
the right size to cover up the hole in the front
wall. He bought it and headed back to the church.

By this time it had started to snow. An older
woman running from the opposite direction was
trying to catch the bus.. She missed it. The pastor
invited her to wait in the warm church for
the next bus 45 minutes later.

She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and
it covered up the entire problem area.

Then he noticed the woman walking down the center
aisle. Her face was like a sheet.. ‘Pastor,’
she asked, ‘where did you get that tablecloth?’
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG
were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the
woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .

The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
told how he had just gotten the Tablecloth. The
woman explained that before the war she and
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
husband or her home again.

The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
but she made the pastor keep it for the church..
The pastor insisted on driving her home, that
was the least he could do.. She lived on the other
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
for the day for a housecleaning job.

What a wonderful service they had on Christmas
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
and many said that they would return..
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
wasn’t leaving.

The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
the front wall because it was identical to one
that his wife had made years ago when
they lived in Austria before the war and how
could there be two tablecloths so much alike.

He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
put in a prison.. He never saw his wife or his home

again all the 35 years in between.

The pastor asked him if he would allow him to
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
Island and to the same house where the pastor
had taken the woman three days earlier.

He helped the man climb the three flights of
stairs to the woman’s apartment, knocked on
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
reunion he could ever imagine.

Buy.com to Make My Wishes Come True

Published by under a bit of everything

As a quilter, I have found that the more I take my time making my quilt blocks the nicer things look. It is important to press each piece after it each is sewn together and then again after each block is made. I would love to have a new iron that has a really good point on it. I have been drooling over the Black and Decker iron at Buy.com. It has the All-Temp Steam feature that would give me the flexibility to select steam at every temperature setting. That helps when I try to steam quilt blocks at lower temperature settings. Buy.com has a good sale price on the model I like so I am hoping my hubby takes note when he reads my blog. Hints are good!

The Black and Decker iron is listed at the Buy.com website at one of the best prices I have seen. I love Black and Decker products. We have had one of their coffee pots for a long time and will probably replace it with another if it ever dies.

Buy.com is the best website for Christmas shopping because they offer name brand products at great prices. Many products are eligible for FREE Budget Shipping. That means more money for more gifts! Check out Buy.com to save time by buying online and save money with their great savings.

Twilight Soundtrack at Buy.com

Published by under entertainment

PhotobucketI have been seeing so many blog posts about the new movie Twilight that I had to find out what this movie is about. I felt left behind so I did a little research. I found out that this movie is based on the New York Times Best-Selling series written by Stephenie Meyer. The books are about a love affair between a teenage girl and a vampire. What?!!

Isabelle Swan moves from Phoenix to Washington where her father lives because of her mother’s remarriage to another man. Edward Cullen is a vampire who lives in a small town with his family. The family lives peacefully in that town without exposing their underlying truths and characteristics.

In her new school Isabella meets Edward. She soon finds out that he is a vampire but knows she is already drawn to him and could never leave him. After a while the enemies of the Cullen’s Family attacks Edwards on his weak point, Sarah.

This powerful story actually has a cult like following. There are over 350 fan sites devoted to this movie. The Twilight soundtrack became only the 6th movie soundtrack EVER to debut at #1 on the Billboard album charts before the movie itself debuted. You will find the best prices on the soundtrack at Buy.com. In fact, the sale price is half of what I priced it at the mall on Saturday.

The promoters of this movie were smart to put this movie out right at the holiday season. It will be fun to go as a family.

Four Foods on Friday #56

Published by under Four Foods on Friday

I don’t know where Val, of Fun, Crafts and Recipes comes up with such great questions! Here are the 4 questions for Four Foods on Friday.

#1. What’s the worst tasting food you’ve ever eaten? I can’t really say that it was terrible but something that I didn’t like was a cold soup that we were served while on a cruise. Soup should be served hot! That reminds me…I was served burned tomato soup at a restaurant. It tasted pretty bad.

#2. Share a funny or embarassing story about a meal you’ve made.
I had my sister and her family over for dinner and served goulash. While putting leftovers in the refrigerator I notice the browned hamburger that was supposed to be in the goulash. I forgot to add it. My brother in-law said it still tasted good. Aw, what a guy.

#3. What food do you burn or have problems cooking most often?
I don’t burn it but I have problems making gravy. I can make a sauce but to make enough for everyone to have gravy…that is a problem.

#4. Name two foods you’ll be eating on this Thanksgiving.

Ham and pumpkin pie.

Where Would we Be Without the Internet?

Oh brother, it snowed this morning. All that yucky white stuff was all over the ground. I am glad I have Internet or I would be seriously depressed. I can log in and check out my favorite websites and pretend it isn’t cold and gray outside. Yay for technology.

These days my life is centered around my blogging buddies and what they have to say each day. It would feel awful to go without checking in on everyone. That is why it is good to have your blog hosted on the best available host.

If you want an easy way to pick a host that fits your needs, use the review system at Web Hosting Geeks. Their web hosting reviews will save you a lot of wasted time and money. Not only do they list the top 10 hosting sites, they tell you specific reasons why they are in the top ten. They list the basic features like space and price, give specifics as to which give free domain names, how many domains they will host for you and whether or not they offer technical support. If you are looking for specific hosting, say ecommerce, they have divided their reports for specific types. You can go directly to the ecommerce tab to see which hosts offer the best features for that type of website. Web Hosting Geeks knows what is important to webmasters and they have made it easy for you to find the best host for your situation.

Fill Your Bathtub with Cereal

Published by under a bit of everything

Do you understand why I am addicted to reading my friend’s blogs? If I didn’t spend hours online, I would never find out all the important things that happen in life! I just saw on Ted Murphy’s blog that he is giving away 52 boxes of cereal! Are you asking why? You have to know Ted. He is all about giving and helping others.

Photobucket

Enter Ted’s contest and help a family in need. All you have to do is blog or twitter about the contest and tell Ted what your favorite cereal is. You can choose to keep your winnings or give them away, but if Ted’s contest gets over 500 unique comments, he’ll give another 52 boxes of cereal to his local food bank. You win, they win, we all win together!

Jump on board and get everyone excited about this contest and we might start a snowball event! Just think, everyone will be helping feed those who are hungry.

Speech Recognition Software at a Discount

When I think of all the doors that speech recognition software can open for people who have health issues or who just have busy lives, it makes me want to shout about it from the roof tops.

My friend Owen has been telling us about how easy it is to set up the software and use this terrific product. In fact, Owen was so impressed with the capabilities of Dragon Naturally speaking that he made a video about it.

Dragon Naturally Speaking is a voice recognition software that allows you to create documents and emails three times faster and with 99% accuracy. In an effort to allow more people to afford this software, Nuance has a special offer where you can save 25% with discount code on Dragon with this link. You must click the image below and use this code (DNSMSBG) together. The code will not work from other sources.

The following offers are available:
25% off Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred
25% off Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard
10% off MacSpeech Dictate

I cannot say enough about this wonderful software but my friend Brett has all the right words to tell you about it in the following article:

Hello my name is Brett Bumeter and I would like to introduce you to Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 is a program that enables you to type with your voice by speaking out loud. All you have to do is speak in a normal voice at a normal rate of speed, and your computer will capture every word that you say almost. The program claims to have about 99% accuracy, and it’s been my experience using the program over the last two years through versions nine and version 10 that this claim is extremely accurate.

The program is extremely fast whether you’re using a noise canceling microphone headset plugged into your computer or whether you’re using a pocket MP3 recorder. I actually use both setups and have had great success having my voice and words turned into text by typing them into my computer, as well as using my voice to turn my words into an MP3 file on my MP3 recorder which I can then import into my computer via USB, and have Dragon NaturallySpeaking transcribe those words automatically into text while the computer does something else.

Right now I am writing this particular note to you to kind of show you just what Dragon NaturallySpeaking can do. I say show you because I’m writing this letter with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to write with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10, but it does take a little practice in order to start thinking quickly and thinking out loud with your voice. That the nice thing about it is that you don’t have to stare at your computer screen for long hours anymore.

Typically when we type with our hands, we tend to look at the computer that were typing on. To be more specific we tend to look at the computer screen, and this wears out our eyes and makes us physically tired. The muscles in our eyes absorb all that light from the screen, and the longer we stare at that light the more tired our body becomes. This can even lead to headaches or migraines or just fatigue in general.

So the cool thing about Dragon NaturallySpeaking is that you can look around the room, look around where ever you happen to be, and taken some sights and smells in that you normally wouldn’t have the luxury of doing with your eyes glued to your screen. This really does help to keep your brain moving, and it helps get you thinking outside the box and focused on those things that you need to be focused on.

If you are the type of person that uses a white board quite a bit, you can even stand up and start brainstorming on a whiteboard, while you are simultaneously dictating the thoughts that come to you onto your computer. Now that’s not necessarily the most effective way to capture information off of a whiteboard, but if you need the information copied into text form, it can be very useful and I’m simply trying to illustrate a point. :-)

There are many ways that you can use this particular program to save you a great deal of time, to further illustrate that point, I have written this entire note so far in under three minutes flat! That’s a little over 175 words per minute, and this is actually the fastest ever time that I have recorded with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. When I used version 9, I had clocked the program running at about 167 words per minute, and so with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 and a brand-new laptop, I have just set a new personal record. :-)

That doesn’t include editing time which I will go back and do now, but it’s still amazing to be a laugh your words and thoughts captured so quickly by your computer.

Sincerely,
Brett Bumeter

http://softduit.com

PS Even with 3 minutes of editing thrown in (which included writing the salutation and a few more lines) this article still only took 6 minutes to write, and that averages out to about 92 words per minute!
