You Wanted That New Model

Published by under a bit of everything

Some people just know what to do. They know how what to do with huge quantities of food. They make contacts and help the needy. They know what to do with old eye glasses. The Lion’s Club gets them to the right people so that people who cannot afford glasses can utilize them. That brings me to our old useless cell phones. What do we do with our old phones when we update? There has to be a valuable way to use these little packages of technology. You wanted that new model but what do you do with your old phone?

Flipswap is an online service that gives you an instant estimate of the value of your old phones. You can also donate your cell phone to women’s shelters and women’s groups to give to battered women/at-risk women so they can call 911 in case of emergency. Check with your local police department. Check out www.phonesforgood.com. Up to $50.00 goes to your favorite charity from each sale. AT&T has donated more than $500,000 worth of prepaid phone cards to Cell Phones for Soldiers and is now offering more than 2,000 company-owned wireless store locations across the country as drop-off sites to help recycle used cell phones for the program, through July 2009.

Finding Fabric

Published by under entertainment

I am stuffed! Hubby fixed a large ham and we have been stuffing our faces with it for two days. I love ham fixed with mayo and mustard on a couple slices of fresh bread. We have eaten every leftover from Thanksgiving dinner. Even the pie has left the building.

I do believe that we have worked off most of the calories we acquired eating this holiday season. We walked around a few stores and checked out the bargains. We also hit the fabric stores to see what bargains we could find. We were pleasantly surprised to find a few sale items that most might have missed. While others were at the electronics stores we were finding new fat quarters and yardgoods at our favorite quilt fabric stores. I just wish we had more time once we finished shopping so that we would be more enegized to sew. It is either shop for fabric or sew. There doesn’t seem to be enough time to do both. Oh, and cook, clean and make sure we have clean bath towels.

How was your holiday season this past Thanksgiving?

Found: Cable

Published by under a bit of everything

Oh my goodness, it has been a busy day! I hope everyone enjoyed the sales this black friday. If you were like me, you stayed home and checked the online deals for the best deals. My son, however, was watching TV because he does not have cable at his apartment. I have been looking for some of the best deals for him and I found out that Charter is offering High Speed Internet, Digital Cable, and home phone service in a bundle. You can get one for just $25, two for $75, and three for $150. If you go to http://connect.charter.com/landing/cpg/learnmore_PPC.asp?ID=197&OriginatingID=420136 and order their Ultimate Bundle, you will get a $250 gift card AND a chance to win an Xbox 360. This is certainly the best holiday deal for bundled services, and is the best price available. I am going to have to get this for my son. He is missing out on all of his favorite shows, and he is getting tired of having such slow internet. I guess I had better hurry and get this great deal before it is too late. This is really going to be a great Christmas present, both for him and for myself. I think I should keep the $250 gift card for myself! He can keep the Xbox if we win it, though. ;)

Turn That Down!

Published by under a bit of everything

PhotobucketWhen children who are under the age of 18 get in trouble, who are the ones who feel punished? The parents of said children. When fined for an infraction, who foots the bill? The parents cough up the money. There is something wrong with this picture.

A Colorado judge has decided that since having parents pay a fine is not deterring teenagers from playing their music loudly he needed to find something that struck home with the kids. Rather than issue a fine for mom and dad to pay, he’s devised his own punishment: Noise violators are forced to listen to an hour of their least favorite music, from Sinatra to Barry Manilow, kids are forced to listen to music they might not like. The lesson seems to be working. The instance of teens violating the noise ordinance has lowered considerably.

Toys That Encourage Learning

Published by under entertainment

When I have Thanksgiving dinner at my house I have a lot to plan. I like to plan my menu and then buy the groceries. I make sure the beds are ready for guests who are staying all night. I like to have movies and games for everyone to play.

My great nieces range from 2 years old to 12 years in age and I try to have some things for them to do. I try to have toys that they can sit and play with so they aren’t bored. MEGA Brands has the toys I like because they are made of tough sturdy materials that last. They are the types of toys that kids like to play with for long periods of time. That gives us adults plenty of time for card games and naps.

I think that the thing I like best about MEGA Brands toys is that they encourage kids to use their imaginations. From the piano, described in my video to the Disney magic found in the Princess Enchanted Gardens, kids learn from these toys. They are learning language skills, colors, numbers and how to make things work.

MEGA Brands has an awesome selection of toys that all members of your family will enjoy for many years.

Heads or Tails What We Do With Our Hands

Published by under entertainment

PhotobucketThe theme over at Heads or Tails this week is to think of anything you can do with your hands. I remember playing Slap Jack with my sisters. We played for blood and sometimes drew blood. We would slap the hand of whoever was trying to slap the jack first and sometimes it would get violent. LOL Did you play Slap Jack?
Photobucket
Divide the pack roughly equally between the players. Everyone holds their cards as a face down pile. Going around the table clockwise, each player paces the top card of their pile face up in the centre of the table, making a face-up pile. When someone plays a jack, the first player to slap it – i.e. put their hand palm down on top of the centre pile – wins the centre pile and adds these cards face down to the bottom of their own pile. Play then continues starting with the player to the left of the one who won the cards.

When playing a card you must not peek at it in advance; you must turn it over so that everyone sees it at once. It is best if the card is moved to the centre of the table face down and then turned “away from” the player (so that if anything the others will see it a split second before the player).

If several people slap, the person whose hand is underneath (i.e. in contact with the card) is the winner of the cards. A referee might be needed if you are very competitive about this.

If a player slaps a card that is not a jack, the player who slapped has to give the top card of their own pile face down to the person who played the card that they wrongly slapped. That person adds it to the bottom of their own pile.

If you run out of cards you no longer play a card when it is your turn, obviously. You are still entitled to take part in the slapping of the next jack and if you win you are back in the game. If someone else wins, or if you meanwhile slap a card that is not a jack, you are out of the game.

When one player has all the cards, that player wins. If you wish, you can play with the time limit, and if no one collects all the cards before then, the person holding most cards when the time limit is reached is the winner.

Better Toys

Published by under entertainment

Since we are all watching our pennies this holiday season, I think it is important to research what we buy. It does not do us any good to walk into the mall and shop without a plan. We need to consider carefully each gift we plan to buy and make sure it fits our budget. When buying for our children, it is crazy to buy all the junky toys that will end up in the toy box after an hour. Mega Brands has gone out of their way to introduce kids to toys that make them think. Stimulating a child’s mind helps them to grow into individuals who think outside the box.

While browsing the Mega Brand’s website I discovered so many interesting and fun toys that I would like as an adult! Take a look at Trefalkyr the Jungle Predator Dragon. PhotobucketThis is not just another dragons figurine. This well made toy is a huge dragon egg that unfurls to an awesome dragon with beautiful plasma wings.

Besides having a catalog full of wonderful toys, the MEGA Brands site is filled with activities for the kids.

If you want to buy dole drum toys that all the kids have, go to the mall. If you want to buy toys that stimulate your kids and even the big kids in your life, to think, check out Mega Brands.
