Pets Are a No No
Did you know that some universities allow their students to have animals in their dorm rooms? Several universities, including MIT, have now added some pets to the “acceptable” list of dorm possessions. Students at MIT who reside in four of the school’s 11 undergraduate dormitories can bring cats with them to school, thanks to a policy implemented several years ago in an effort to curb students from housing forbidden animals. The story at CNN online, goes on to say that other schools have jumped on the four-footed bandwagon: Stephen’s College, a woman’s college in Columbia, Montana, allows for many household pets, including dogs, provided that they are vaccinated and under forty pounds.
And the SUNY at Canton in New York has provided a designated “pet wing,” home to a variety of small caged animals and cats since 1996.
While animal companionship is largely viewed as a welcome addition to family homes, there are many roadblocks that have deterred Tufts from altering its pet policy.
One reason is that many people are allergic to animals. The other is the cleanliness of animals in dorm rooms. I know for a fact that dorm rooms are not the cleanest place on earth. Put an animal into that setting and it can only get worse. We have all heard the stories in the news where animal control was called to a home where pets ran amuck. Think of that in a dorm setting. I don’t want to imagine it.

Well, as a pet lover I applaud this because it would bother me to not be able to have had my cat had I went to college immediately out of high school and into a dorm. I can only hope and assume that they maybe have a weekly maid service that they use to help combat whatever odors, messes might be had.

I like to keep a pet, but i also think it’s not a easy thing. pets also need friends and space. so i agree feed pets in a kinship family

I love pets. Cats are my favorite. yes you are right that many people don’t really know how to take care of them and hence become ill (both human and pets).

I don’t think it’s a good idea to allow people to bring a pet to the dorm. Most of my roommates in college were not the cleanliest people in college. I can imagine adding a dog to that would have been real problems. Also, if you have roommates that don’t get along a dog added to the mix can cause problems

If someone’s a slob, they’re a slob the pet’s irrelevant. The homes you see on the news are typically people who are isolated with few, if any, visitors to point out the situation. Dorms are always active with people coming and going. No one’s room is going to get that bad without the rest of the students on the floor grabbing the torches and pitchforks.

The pets must be kept clean or else both humans and pets will suffer.

i am a huge pet lover and have three cats, but i don’t think pets should be allowed in dorms. dorm rooms are usually fairly small, and pets cause odors and are messy.

I think allowing pets is a great idea. If there is a pet building allergic people know to avoid it–and I don’t feel I am a slob because I have a dog. I may be a slob, but it sure isn’t the dog’s fault
And actually having a pet like a cat might mean people are less likely to be irresponsible, overly loud or have crazy parties. When I lived in a dorm the pnly thing I found hard to deal with was people who a too loud, I really didn’t care about anything else.

I’m an animal lover and animal rights activist, so of course I love the idea. My concerns are: the animal having enough space and the ability of what are typically young, less experienced adults being responsible for their care. College students tend to have a lot on their minds between classes and socializing, and I would worry that a pet at the dorm might not be a priority when the chance arises to spend a night away or put money toward books/beer/etc.
I don’t know, the more I think about it, the more I that perhaps a room within a building of about 100 immature 20 year-olds is not the best place for a pet.
I have the opposite reaction to the post above mine. I doubt that having a pet would make the students less irresponsible. I think that the poor animal will simply be subjected to the crazy behavior.

I read something like this on the news the other day. I’m all for owning pets - we won’t get into the discussion of just how many I own. However, I do believe that pets don’t mix with kids that are in college and working at the same time. It’s just too much to handle, especially in a dorm setting. If someone wants to own a pet bad enough during college, they should try to find a local apartment to rent that will let them own a dog or a cat. That way, it is fair to all the students and those with health concerns wouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Pets are an important part of my life, my dogs and cats mean the world to me. However, you must be responsible for them as they rely on you 100%, so I totally agree with what has been said here!

yeah… that would not be a good thing to imagine:( I remembered way back in college… takes a lot of patience and tolerance to finally able to get along with roomates especially if you’re a neat freak!
