Strong Bones
I just hung up the phone from talking with my prescription provider. They finally got the information needed to send me my Actonel. I have been without for three weeks now. I don’t want to risk a decline in my bone denseness. I take Actonel to increase my bone strength. I have Osteopenia. That means I have the beginnings of Osteoporosis. Luckily, the doctor caught it while I have a good chance of doing something to prevent Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis, or thinning bones, is a serious condition that can result in tremendous pain with fractures. I have had my share of broken bones. Risk factors for osteoporosis include aging, being female, low body weight, low sex hormones such as during menopause, smoking, and some medications. I have all the risk factors except smoking which I have never done. There are no symptoms of this bone disease until you fracture a bone. I demanded that my doctor give me a bone density test at age 45. She thought I was too young to worry about bone density. Ha! Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis include calcium and vitamin D, regular exercise, and osteoporosis medications, if needed.
