Are They Linking to Your Site?

Published by Karen at 8:16 am under internet technology & interests

coffee-thief.jpgOne of these days I will wake up and learn that people will steal. For now, I am going to think that most people are honest and would not knowingly steal. I am shocked that people will steal your content by linking to it and use your bandwidth to support having that content on their site. Why? Surely, it cannot cost very much to host their own content and pictures. Maybe it is the thrill of getting away with something illegal.

What am I talking about? Well, I recently ran across a very informative article “How to prevent hotlinking and bandwidth theft” over at the Swollen Pickle. He explained this in such a manner that, even I, understood what was going on and what to do to prevent it. He even gives examples of code and how to put it into your blog. I appreciate that he took the time to, number one, point this out and, number two, tell us a few ways to prevent it.

Unfortunately, there will always people who want something for nothing. We need to help each other put a stop to theft.

I’ve been online a long time. Someone will always steal your work, art, drawing or writing. If you block them in one way they just find another. You either blog for the pleasure of being creative or you don’t. I could spend time on what has been stolen or I could just get on with my life. I learned that the hard way in 1998 when my ASCII art was being taken and another woman claimed she had made them all. There isn’t anything you can really do that makes one bit of difference. I’m not rich enough for lawyers and I don’t have all the free time to put into doing anything myself.
