Fly in for an Appendectomy

Published by Karen at 10:00 am under a bit of everything

spread-sunshine-badge1.jpgI have often wondered what would happen if someone fell ill while on a cruise. If you were stuck out one the ocean and became horribly ill, what could you do? A teenager found out. Laura Montero, 14, fell ill aboard the Dawn Princess cruise ship off the coast of Baja California.

The ship sent out a distress call that was answered by the USS Ronald Reagan, which was on training maneuvers about 500 miles away. The nuclear ship was the closest ship with a hospital facility. A helicopter picked Laura up and whisked her away to the hospital facility. On December 18th, she had an appendectomy aboard the nuclear ship!

Laura is recovering and the USS Ronald Reagan completed maneuvers as planned and was back in port as scheduled. Lucky little girl!
