Hot In Prison

Published by at 3:21 pm under a bit of everything

prison.jpgMy mom heads to Arizona for the winter. I don’t blame her. Although the snow is pretty, it is an aggravation at times. Mom lives near Yuma, one of the hottest places in the US. Fortunately, she doesn’t live there in the summer when the temperatures get unbearable.

Yuma was chosen as the location for the Territorial Prison. The Territorial Prison, also known as “Hell Hole” and “Devil’s Island” opened in Arizona desert on July 1, 1876 when the first 7 inmates entered the prison and they were locked into the new cells they built themselves. The history of the prison is very interesting. One article stated that the prisoners were treated humanly but most of the articles I have read recount some pretty horrible things. Many prisoners, from across the US, were sent to carry out sentences at The Territorial Prison. Interesting.
